A keyboard-first communication tool is one built so you can reach any action, starting a call, sending a message, finding a past conversation, without touching a mouse, usually through a global hotkey and a type-ahead command bar rather than menus and diallers.
The pattern isn't new to communication tools specifically. Command bars became the default in a run of software people describe as feeling fast: project trackers, launchers, email clients built around a single keystroke that summons a search box instead of a maze of menus. The common thread is that the tool gets out of the way until you need it, then answers to a keystroke rather than a click.
Applied to business communication, that means the parts people do dozens of times a day, reaching a colleague, starting a call, checking what was said last time, shouldn't need a dialler, a contact list scroll or a hunt across five apps to work out which one that person actually replied in.
